Naked Empire Naked Empire is the eighth book of Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series, returning to Emperor Richard and Empress Kahlan as protagonists unlike its predecessor, The Pillars of Creation. The two are joined by their new companions, Tom, Richard's half-sister Jennsen, and her goat Betty. The book opens with races, sort of like birds, chasing after the company for some reason, after which Richard finds himself blackmailed into helping the titular naked empire, Bandakar, currently under the rule of a Quisling wizard named Nicholas, a sympathizer for the Imperial Order. Apparently a resident of Bandakar poisoned Richard, with the antidote found in the Empire, and the doses being located in different parts, and Richard and company thus needing to hunt them down before it's too late. All in all, I thought it was an excellent book, even if it could've easily been half as long and Goodkind commits the usual sin of misused punctuation. I really liked the political themes, how the book explored the dangers of pacifism and nonviolence (and Richard finds himself in conflict with antiwar protesters towards the end), how there's no shame in standing up and fighting back against your enemy instead of giving in to them. Highly recommended. Current Mood: enthralled |

Another Dear Abby gem
DEAR ABBY: A friend forwarded me an item she had read on the Internet. I have learned a lot during my 38 years of living, and think these important life lessons might be something you'd like to pass along to your many readers. 1. Respect others, even if they don't respect you. Later in life they may remember that respect. 2. Love with your whole heart. It may be broken, but you can't say that you never loved. 3. Treat animals with kindness, and it will be repaid to you a hundredfold. 4. Be honest with the people you love. Honesty really IS the best policy. 5. Admit your mistakes; it shows you are human. 6. Learn from your mistakes, but don't dwell on them. Negative thinking will only make you depressed -- and that's not good for you or those around you. 7. Tell your family often that you love them. You never know when it will be the last time you get to say it. 8. Never tell others that their dreams are stupid or dumb. Each of us is entitled to our dreams. Who are we to say they won't come true? 9. Realize that the only person you can change is yourself. 10. Be thankful for everything you have. Knowing you are blessed isn't arrogant or cocky if you're truly thankful for your blessings. -- JENNIFER IN COLORADO

SUSE's Reply in Support of Motion to Lift Stay, as text http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=20091225000916111 Here, as promised, is the SUSE Reply [PDF] about lifting the bankruptcy stay, more properly titled SUSE's Reply in Support of its Motion for Relief from the Automatic Stay to Complete International Arbitration. This document is in response to SCO Chapter 11 Trustee Edward Cahn's Objection to SUSE's motion, and they do not hold back. Most interestingly, they highlight the GPL and what it means for SCO's copyright claims. The theme is simple: it's not fair for SCO to get to go forward on its copyright claims without letting SUSE go forward too on its related claims: The SCO Trustee asserts that SCO's claims against Novell and IBM "should be pursued aggressively." (Objection ΒΆ 15.) Yet the SCO Trustee is attempting to prevent SUSE from
pursuing claims in the Arbitration that would undercut SCO's claims. The SCO Trustee proposes the ideal scenario for any litigant: freedom to sue opponents with immunity from countersuits. The goal is clear: SCO hopes to obtain a favorable ruling in the Utah Litigation that would increase the value of its copyright claims, without having to confront troubling (to SCO) UnitedLinux questions that may severely undermine those claims.Such a use of the stay is wholly inconsistent with the stay's legitimate purposes: preserving the estate and giving the debtor a breathing space. Bankruptcy stay isn't supposed to be used to provide a debtor with a litigation advantage, only breathing room to get reorganized. Heaven only knows, SUSE points out, SCO has had plenty of breathing room, more than two years of it, with no positive movement toward reorganization yet on the horizon. |

The Surprise Market
We weren't planning on going out today but a few things came up so we went out anyway. After paying the cell phone bill at the Sprint store, we noticed a lot of activity at the nearby New Castle Farmers Market parking area. It's not usually open on Thursday so we went to check it out. Surprise! They were having holiday hours. (Of course, it wouldn't have been a surprise if I'd checked their website. It's normally open only on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, but it has been open every day from Dec 15 to Christmas Eve.) There was a Santa photo session going on inside the market. So I took the opportunity to snap a picture of Rudolph and Frosty, who were entertaining the crowd that was gathering around the booth. I also ran into my across-the-street neighbor by chance. She too had just found out that the farmers market was open today. |

2 meter converter
Today, I finished a kit I bought at the Ft Wayne Hamfest. I have yet to try it out as it will need some alignment first, but here it is. Nope, its far from a tube radio ;) This is a 2 meter converter which will convert a receiver tuning the 40 meter band to receive the 2 meter band. It is designed by Rick Campbell KK7B and I got it from Kanga USThe coils were the most challenging part as each one had to be fabricated. L9 in the upper right was the most tedious. 42 turns of #32 on a little toroid core.. *Whew* I plan to connect it to the MicroR2 40 meter receiver which is another kit I built from Kanga US. Maybe I can find some CW or SSB on 2 meters? Who knows! Current Mood: accomplished |

SUSE's Reply, Cahn's Objection to Motion to Compel, and MORs, MORs, MORs http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=20091224093507497 Lots of bankruptcy filings, including a reply by SUSE in support of its motion for relief from the automatic stay and Chapter 11 Trustee Edward Cahn has filed an Objection to Al Petrofsky's motion to compel him to comply with reporting requirements. And Ocean Park Advisors has filed an Amended Exhibit A. But that isn't the big news. The big news is that SCO has filed its Monthly Operating Reports, or MORs, for July through September, 2009. But interestingly, they are filed with a disclaimer that they are filed "consistent with the format and allocations of liabilities as previously adopted by the Debtors," because Mr. Cahn and his financial advisors simply have not yet had time to "review all of the historical information previously reported by the Debtors", so Cahn reserves the right to amend them once he has done a more thorough review. "Historically," the disclaimer continues, "the Company may not have distinguished between direct liabilities of debtor and non-debtor companies." That would be the foreign subsidiaries, I expect, like Japan and Germany. "The Trustee with its financial advisors is conducting a thorough analysis of the intercompany arrangement among the debtors and the non-debtor subsidiaries and reserves the right to modify these MORs upon completion of its review." It cautions the reader not to rely on the information, as they are filing just to fulfill reporting requirements. I would take it that SCO may have more in the way of assets than is reported here, then. September says $1,287,030. And we will have to wait for the real MORs. |

Rehoboth Beach and outlet malls
Sunny and 34°F. The goal of the day was to go to the Tanger outlet malls in Rehoboth Beach. Of course, there's no reason why I couldn't find a bunch of caches along the way since the outlet stores would be open for at least 5 hours after dusk. I cherry-picked geocaches that I thought would be findable even with snow on the ground. That's not always easy to determine beforehand though. Two geocaches I had doubts about turned out to be easy because those were in spots that happened to be sheltered from snow. The most unusual thing I saw today was a Futuro house at "Tomorrow's House from Yesterday - 2". I've seen another one like this at Mill Creek Park in Beverly, NJ. The Tanger outlet stores are split into 3 locations: 2 outlet malls in Rehoboth Beach roughly across the road from each other and another outlet mall 1.8 miles away. That made shopping a bit tricky. I had to get a store directory to find out which stores are in which outlet mall and plan accordingly. I have to say though that outlet shopping isn't all it's cut out to be. Most of the deals aren't that great. In some cases, I noticed that I could get the same item for less in a regular store if I used coupons or waited for store specials. Anyway, we got what we went there for and just spent the rest of the time browsing. ( The caches... ) |

General update
First and foremost, saw Avatar with the roomies on Monday. Instead of the usual five bucks, it was eight because it was in 3-D. Worth every penny. Avatar was fucking spectacular, eye candy I hadn't seen since Starship Troopers. Cameron wove a rich tapestry of creative sci-fi that blew me away. It takes a lot for a Hollyweird movie to impress this teddybear, and this flick hit the spot. I MUST see it again! The mood was killed afterward, though, when I confronted a teenager who wouldn't shut up during the flick. I was nice, calm, cool, collected, and he accepted the admonishment with grace. I got back in the truck with my buds and began the drive back. Upon passing him and his crew, I tipped my hat and said "thanks for listening". A girl in the group told me to "Fuck off, dude", at which point I lost control. I stopped the truck, got out, and ran up to him (should have run up to the girl), screaming in his face. Panger got between us, and another motorist said he'd called 911. I got back into my truck and drove off. It ruined the rest of the evening because I was ashamed for losing control like that. Forty-nine times out of fifty, I can keep my cool; that just happened to be the fiftieth. Last night I did some cleaning of the den, organizing and putting away some of our Craigslist booty. I need to add a vaccuum to our list. Watched G-force on DVD with Fire, fun cubby flick if you're in the mood for that kind of thing. Special agent guinea pigs FTW! :p I'm kind of ambivalent about the group therapy I am participating in. I swear I feel like I'm in sixth grade again. Most of the concepts being taught to us, I've already known for months, if not years. I have already gone through most of the exercises and introspection outlined in the papers and charts. In comparing myself to the others in the group, I find myself likely the higher functioning, though that could just be the narcissist in me. There is still no question of my need to be there. I just wish we weren't coddled and had more of a kickass drill-instructer atmosphere to it. I went for labs (bloodwork) this afternoon, only to get to the lobby and realize I'd forgotten my paperwork >.< Forgetful bear is forgetful. I had to go home to get it and come back. Fire Lupine joined me for the ride, and we had lunch afterward. Had a good practice/recording session, I am approaching the time when I am ready to lay some real tracks. This evening myself and Fire helped Fox and Teddy unload some firewood for the new shop. They installed a high efficiency wood stove in the shop since the gas line had been disconnected at some unknown point in the past. So we won't need for warmth. Finally, I have re-started my artistic woodburning, getting in a little practice on Chirstmas presents. |

Apple Files Reply in Florida Action Re Apple's Motion to Dismiss or Transfer Venue http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=20091223224318490 Apple has filed its reply to Psystar's Response [PDF] to Apple's motion to dismiss or transfer venue [PDF]. Is that sentence clear? To amplify, Apple filed a motion to dismiss or to transfer venue in Florida, where Psystar had filed a case against Apple midstream in the California action, and Apple wants it either brought to an end or if not, sent to California. All that is on the table in Florida is the issue about Rebel EFI, and in Psystar's dreams its reheated antitrust accusations, but Apple wants this all to be over or at least not to have to keep travelling to Florida to finish the farce, and so it tells the judge in Florida about the recent ruling in California on December 15, ordering a permanent injunction against Psystar, which, in Apple's view, reinforces and confirms that "this case should be dismissed or transferred to the Northern District of California." Apple gives the court a real earful about what Psystar has been doing and accuses Psystar of misrepresentations to the Florida court in its filing. |

Happy Holidays & Merry Christmas
I just wanted to wish everyone a good time and a happy new year. I'm a little under the weather right now so I haven't been out of the house. I really wanted to make the Montreal Furry Christmas thing but I just haven't been feeling right this past week. So much to talk about, so much to tell. If I had wishes one would be to be with my Bearz in Australia. I miss him. I miss that kinda love. I hope his x-mas is good. And I hope he's not to sad that I couldn't be there. Getting a work visa for over there seems to be harder then I expected. That and I'm not to bright when it comes to government red tape. I'm sure I'll find a way soon where I can go and stay there. Second wish, to turn back time and do everything right from the start. I wish I knew then what I know now. I could stack the deck, so to speak. Third, a wish for hope, for everyone. I don't see to much of it around these days. Ya, hope, and maybe some good advice and guidance. Anyways, Merry Whatever it is you do and I "hope" this next year is good to all of you. I mean that. Take Care (LDW) Current Mood: Not Well |
